Physical Therapy FAQs

Everything you need to know about getting started with care at Achieve Physical Therapy & Wellness.

Getting Started

No. Illinois is a Direct Access state, meaning you can begin physical therapy without a physician referral. At Achieve Physical Therapy & Wellness in Barrington, IL, you can schedule an evaluation directly. We coordinate with your physician when appropriate to ensure comprehensive care.

Our Free 20-Minute Injury Consultation allows you to speak directly with a physical therapist to determine whether physical therapy is appropriate, whether additional medical evaluation is needed, or whether a short-term DIY strategy may help first. This is a no-pressure way to gain clarity before committing to treatment.

Your 60-minute initial evaluation ($180) includes a detailed movement assessment, strength testing, joint mobility analysis, posture evaluation, and identification of compensatory patterns. You will leave with a clear diagnosis, measurable goals, and an evidence-based treatment plan.

Follow-up sessions are available in:

  • 30-minute sessions ($80)
  • 60-minute sessions ($150)

All visits are one-on-one with your physical therapist.

Most patients attend 1–2 times per week depending on diagnosis, goals, and phase of recovery. Your frequency is personalized to maximize results.

TMJ / TMD Therapy

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) therapy addresses jaw pain, clicking, locking, headaches, and dysfunction related to clenching or grinding.

If jaw clicking is accompanied by pain, tension, or locking, targeted therapy can improve joint alignment, muscle coordination, and movement patterns.

Common causes include jaw clenching, stress, trauma, arthritis, poor posture, and muscular imbalances.

Dry Needling & Manual Therapy

Dry needling uses a thin monofilament needle to create a chemical response within muscle tissue, helping activate or relax muscles to reduce pain and improve movement.

Most patients feel minimal discomfort. A brief muscle twitch response may occur, followed by temporary soreness similar to post-exercise muscle fatigue.

No. Dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neuromuscular principles and targets muscular trigger points rather than traditional meridian systems.

Manual therapy refers to hands-on techniques including joint mobilization, soft tissue work, and manipulation to restore mobility and reduce pain.
